Frequently Asked Questions
Thanks for asking!
2. How long does it take to build a custom home?
This is an often asked question...and again, the answer is it depends!
- Many of the issues in FAQ One, "How much does a custom
home cost?" apply here.
- A quick designer can produce a constructible set of drawings in 2-3 months provided you
know pretty much what you want. See FAQ Three
for additional information on design times and costs.
- Permitting may take 3-10 weeks depending on the reviewing agency, the adequacy of the
plans, and the busyness of the marketplace.
- Then depending on the size of the home and the lot difficulty you're looking at anywhere
from 6-12 months for the construction with the norm around 7 months. Again, provided
there's an available and skilled labor force in your market.
- We've done a custom homes from 4-1/2 months to 16 months...it just depends.
- A lot depends on how quickly the homeowner's can make decisions about what they want in
the house. You like to have all these decisions made during design so they can be
put on the plans. However, a lot of times the homeowner is not ready to make those
decisions yet so they get pushed off until later. Later needs to happen fairly early
so that any long lead time orders can be identified and made. If the contractor has
to wait for the decision, or if the decision comes to late or is changed, the project can
easily be delayed.
